Story of The Week

Being great on the field does not just happen on game day!

Patrick Mahomes' journey from a young boy in Tyler, Texas, to becoming the NFL's best quarterback is a testament to talent, hard work, and perseverance. Born on September 17, 1995, the 6'2 and 225 pound Mahomes was exposed to professional sports early on, as his father, Pat Mahomes, was a Major League Baseball pitcher. This upbringing instilled a competitive spirit and a strong work ethic in young Patrick.

Mahomes excelled in multiple sports at Whitehouse High School, showing exceptional talent in football, baseball, and basketball. Opting to pursue football, he attended Texas Tech University, where he set records and garnered national attention. His junior year was particularly noteworthy as he led the nation in passing yards and total offense, showcasing his potential to NFL scouts.

Drafted 10th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, Mahomes spent his rookie season learning from veteran quarterback Alex Smith. In 2018, as the starting quarterback, he threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns, earning the NFL MVP award and solidifying his place as a top-tier quarterback.

Mahomes' success is not just due to his natural talent but also his rigorous training regimen and meticulous preparation. His trainer, Bobby Stroupe, designs a comprehensive workout program that includes mobility training, strength and conditioning, and explosive power workouts. These sessions often involve medicine ball exercises, cone drills, sled pushes, and circuit training, all tailored to enhance Mahomes' physical attributes and on-field performance.

Mental preparation is equally critical. Mahomes emphasizes the importance of understanding what he aims to achieve each day and maintains a disciplined routine that includes studying game film and practicing specific scenarios. This approach helps him stay sharp and ready to perform under pressure, especially during critical moments in games.

Mahomes' ability to maintain high performance is also attributed to his focus on nutrition and recovery. He follows a clean diet, rich in proteins, fruits, and vegetables, and incorporates regular recovery sessions involving stretching, sauna, and ice baths to keep his body in peak condition.

This combination of strategic physical training, mental preparation, and a disciplined lifestyle has made Patrick Mahomes the best quarterback in the NFL, demonstrating that greatness is achieved through a blend of talent, hard work, and unwavering dedication.
